This is a classic and traditional Leiber bag. A snakeskin bag with a decorative frame with semi precious stones describes the visual appearance of most Leiber bags. This bag is just that and it is a winner. Judging from the identification label, it is an early bag, yet it presents in a very good manner. The bag is small to medium size and it is very rounded. It is covered with the skins of the python snake. They are dyed a deep black and are glazed so that they have a bright shine. The segments are connected with trim made from these skins. The skins are in very good condition being soft to the touch. The frame is a half moon shape. It is gold plated and has a stove top pattern being fluted or grooved. (Many necklaces of the time were designed with this ribbed effect.) The frame is fluted on the outside and inside. The frame is a modified gate type. The clasp is very large and comes from behind. Its front has semi precious stones that are bezel set and multi faceted. They are geometrical and four are squares and there is one large oval stone. Two are carnelian and are an orange red color, two are jadeite (?) and the color is green and the oval is a black onyx. The top of the clasp has an enormous black onyx multi faceted stone and it too is stepped. The clasp opens by lifting it up and closes when pressed down with a click. There is a substantial herringbone jewelry quality chain with a drop of 20". This chunky chain can be tucked inside the bag using Leiber's optional internal hardware. The inside is lined with both the python on the top and a black silk fabric underneath. There is an open slip pocket and the gold identification panel is affixed inside. The area around the pocket is worn. The purse measures 9"w x 7 3/4"h x 1"d. The bag is in great condition. There are minuscule indications of age and wear but it is still very presentable and has many more years ahead of it. There might be a little metal wear but I'm not sure. From afar, it is undoubtedly a Judith Leiber. The bag has a slight deco vibe and it is bargain priced. so if you always yearned for a quintessential Leiber bag, this one is for you.
