Downton Abbey on LSD??? A marriage of two most divergent components! They said it wouldn't work but leave it to Betsy Johnson to perform her magic and, lo and behold; we have a successful union!!! We all know Betsey Johnson as an American designer best known for her feminine and whimsical designs. Many of her designs are considered "over the top" and most are overly embellished. These words perfectly describe this bag. Betsey Johnson has really achieved a campy, flamboyant and outrageous bag with this one. It is patterned after bags from the early part of the century. The shape of the bag is that of an antique beaded bag because the frame of the bag actually is from the early part of the century. The frame probably was a gold tone metal that has been blackened somewhat to give it a more antiqued look. The frame has open work and engravings of flowers. It has a large "crown" like decorative piece that functions as the clasp. There is a rhinestone in the middle of this filigreed piece that is pushed to open the bag. It probably originally had some other stone since rhinestones were not used in this manner then. Now for the body of the bag. It is wild! It is completely covered with light gold sequins. These sequins have a light sheen and they are sewn so that they overlap and create a thick covering. The back is just sequins, sequins and sequins and is most conservative. However, the front is the complete opposite....jeweled in a "punk" like manner. I just shake my head when I look at it! There is a vertical decoration in the middle consisting of two huge oval glass multi faceted stones that are outlined with multi colored small beads. One is emerald green, the other pumpkin orange. There is a diamond shape on the top and bottom, each having a mirrored square and stitchery inside. These diamonds repeat on the sides of the vertical decoration. Also there are round mirrors outlined with colored threads throughout. The color of the threads are bright orange, soft orange, hot pink and lime green. I think that's it......enough? Somehow all this works! There is an original chain to carry the bag with a drop of 8". The inside is lined with a satiny light gold fabric. There's a small open slip pocket and the hot pink Betsy Johnson label is sewn inside. The inside is very clean. The bag measures 6 3/4"w x 7"h (including the crown) x 1"d. The bag is in great condition. There might be a very few missing sequins on the bottom corner on one side, but it is not significant. Whomever designed this must of had a blast! "No holds barred" No restrictions- just let loose! This bag would be quite an accessory to very conservative formal attire...the ying and the yang! Of course, it would also go with a outrageous outfit . In any event, this marriage works! Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
