Everyone loves a bargain. Here we have a "two for one" sale offered at an extremely low price in order to reduce stock. Both bags are fun, happy and unlike bags of today. In the late '70's early '8's, Patricia Smith began creating "moon bags" out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The bags were unique in so far as they had a resin flap that was hand painted and attached to the body of the bag. These flaps were colorful florals, repros of famous paintings, stylized portraits of women or animals and modern designs. The body of the bags were either needlepoint, leather, suede or faux leather. The company continued to create these popular bags until the early '90's when Karen Jordan replaced Patricia Smith and the company soon stopped business. Offered here are two moon bags, both on the small side, both with botanical plaques. The black bag has a very stylized version of "flowers" and the plaque is scalloped adding to the interest. The colors are greys and browns on a very pale lemon background. The plaque attaches to the leather body (I believe it to be real leather) by the use of velcro. The front of the bag is a needlepoint whose theme is the same "flowers" as the ones in the plaque. The same colors are used with the addition of shiny metallic bronze, silver and gold threads. There is a long strap that can be tucked inside when the bag is used as a clutch. The drop is 21". The back of the plaque has the gold identification tag indicating all of Patricia Smith's information including the date of the creation of this bag being 1987. The inside is lined in a black grosgrain fabric. The bag closes with a snap. The inside has the sewn in "Moon Bags identification label. The bag measures 9"w x7"h x2"d. The inside and outside of the bag are in great shape. This bag was well taken care of.
The second bag is a clutch, there isn't any strap. It has a large plaque that has a stylized representation of a butterfly. It is also scalloped but in a different manner. It is large and covers most of the front of the bag.The colors are rusts, browns, reds and black. The background color is a soft sand. The body is leather and its color is putty or camel. The back of the plaque also has the gold identification label but this bag was created in 1980. The plaque is attached with snaps. This is an oldie but goodie. The inside is lined with a camel colored fabric and the black identification label is sewn in. There is a zippered pocket. This bag shows more signs of being vintage but nothing major. It measures 9"w x 7"h x 2"d.
Both bags are youthful and fun. They will certainly gather accolades and compliments. This is really wearable art that can no longer be found. Vintage at its best.
