This "carpet bag" by Koret is Richard Koret's homage to the carpet bags from the mid 1800's. Probably from the mid century, this bag is considerably rare and unusual. Petit point and tapestry bags are commonly found but a bag with what can be considered a thickly woven rug are indeed not often found. Richard Koret began his company in 1920 and it became one of the premier handbag companies especially during the mid century. Their bags sold in high end stores and they created bags for Givenchy, Dior and Cardin. In fact, Judith Leiber was one of their designers. They shut down in the '80's but began again with a "new look" after a hiatus. I have a great respect for this brand and the variety of the types of bags produced never ceases to amaze me. Like this one.....I never imagined such a "carpet bag" to be created by Koret. The bag is large and it is essentially a rectangle ( the top corners are rounded). The woven "rug" is thick and dense. It is probably woven with wool. Each stitch "pops" out and obviously the bag is not flat. The bag has texture and begs to be touched. The palette is stylized and there is an indication that it is a floral since one edge has depictions of a flower and leaves. The colors are amazing, predominantly shades of red, burgundy, brown, yellow, gold, purple, and oyster white. The "floral" side has greens and blues and yellow. The colors are striking, bold, bright and dramatic. There are faint horizontal lines going across the woven scene. The bottom and the gussets are also woven and there is black leather trim. The gold tone frame is shiny and linear with "stripes" of gold tone metal that are crafted so that the lines appear to be both shiny and matte, although that is not the case. The appearance of the frame creates depth and the contrast between the stripes is ingenious. A huge shiny gold tone "ball" clasp opens and closes the bag. There is a gold link carry chain with a drop of 6". The links are large ovals. The inside is lined with a bright red leather (very common for Koret). This is an indication of the high quality of these bags. There is an open slip pocket. Koret is stamped in gold under its icon leaping antelope and "Made in Italy" is also stamped inside. The inside is in fabulous condition, it looks like it was never used. The measurements are 10" w x 8 1/2"h x 2 1/4"d. The bag has the most minimal signs of use especially on the frame. However, it is in wonderful vintage condition. This bag is very unusual and dramatic. It was created by a firm that knew "how to do it." This 1950's bags honors the carpet bags from the 1850's. Mid 20th century does mid 19th century! Condition: Excellent + VINTAGE Condition
