Ingber Company was a handbag manufacturing company based in New York who made bags in the USA. They prided themselves on this. They began in 1903 and continued to make a variety of handbag styles, mostly fabric and soft leathers, until the flood of imported bags forced them out of business in the 1960's. They are still regarded as one of the premier American handbag manufacturers of the mid century. This bag is of the fold over style and it is made of a very plush and soft velvet fabric. It is a jet black. It is rounded and has a slightly wider bottom than top. It is quite large when not folded over. There is a gold tone metal frame upon which are a multitude of very large stones, all individually prong set or set in a decorative bezel. The stones are a variety of shapes including round, oval, pear, marquis, rectangle and square. The colors are a deep ruby red, a clear crystal, a faux pearl milky white, a marbleized glass pink and a solid baby pink. They are glass and translucent although the faux pearls are opaque. Some stones are domed while others are multi faceted. There is a symmetrical order to the frame with a large pink marbleized oval in the middle and similar stones on either side. The stones "pop" and give depth and dimension to the bag. If you look closely, there are decorative metal leaves under the center stones. An amazing detail, proof of a designer who was serious about his design. The bag opens with a simple twist mechanism. The inside is lined with an ecru satin lining. There is an open slip [pocket. There is a label stating "FINE BAGS." However, under this label is a gold embossed stamp stating "Ingber" along with its iconic dachshund figure and the words "Made in the USA". I don't know why anyone covered this identification??? The frame also has the JEMCO stamp on its hardware. The inside is in great shape looking as though it was never used. When flat the measurements are 10"w x 9 1/2"h. When folded over it measures 6-"h x 10"w. The bag is in wonderful condition. There are a few scuffs to the velvet but these are not a big deal. All in all it is the jeweled frame that is the show stopper and it succeeds in making a dramatic statement. A great fold over purse! Condition: Excellent - VINTAGE Condition
