Another "oldie but goodie" by Judith Leiber. After leaving Nettie Rosenfeld, for whom she designed purses for many years, she decided to branch out on her own. This purse is an example of her designs during those early years. Even then, hints of genius were obvious. This bag is small to medium size and it is rectangular with straight lines and curves. It is a very soft and supple leather (kid?) that is dyed a true navy blue color. On the front and back there is an embroidered geometric design of slanted lines as well as "loopy" ones. It is a contrast of straight lines and curvy ones.
The pattern is done in a khaki olive green thick thread. This color thread allows the pattern to show in a subtle manner without being "in your face." It is a very neutral color. The intersecting lines form stylized diamond shapes many of which are completed with the curved loops. The whole thing appears to be a giant zig zag formation. The stitching also gives the appearance of quilting. The purse itself has three inner compartments. One closed one in the middle and two open compartments on the sides. The closed compartment has a gold tone frame and it closes with a most decorative clasp. The clasp consists of five small cubes, two are rose quartz, 2 are green jade like and the one in the middle is black onyx. They are set close together like soldiers and are very dimensional. They rest on a gold tone bar that is lifted upwards to open. They can be seen just over the top of the bag. There are two black silk cords, each at the side of the bag. This carry strap is knotted at the top and can be adjusted. As it is now, the drop is 15". There is a small black silk tassel on either side. The inside of the closed compartment is lined with a black satiny fabric and there is a zippered pocket as well as an open one. The Judith Leiber gold tone identification plaque is affixed inside. The two outer open compartments have leather on the top of their sides which underneath becomes the black fabric. This is a sign of a well made purse. The purse measures 8 1/4" w x 5 1/2"h x 1 1/2"d. The inside is in good vintage condition with some indications of age and wear. The same can be said for the condition of the entire bag. The gold tone frame has lost some of its wash (common in Leiber bags) and the inside leather shows age. All in all, it remains a classy vintage bag with many years of use ahead.
