Exotic evening purses such as the one offered today, often had an Asian or Oriental motif. These embroidered purses had images of floral designs or Asian figures. They were popular since the late 1800's and they peaked during the mid century. They were often sewn in the Orient and later finished in a European country such as France or Belgium. These purses became prized possessions and were sold only in the finest of stores. This particular purse is a little different from most because of the excessive use of the metallic thread in a pointed and sharp manner. The purse is a clutch since there isn't any carry chain. The shape is typical of the embroidered or beaded bags coming out of Europe after the war. It is wider at the bottom and tapers upwards. The background is a jet black silk. However, not much of it is seen since figures cover most of the bag. These figures, all done in the forbidden stitch, appear as a woman walking over a low bridge as well as large stylized birds (?) and beautiful flowers. The colors are primarily hues of blue and coral with many other colors in between. However. unlike most bags of this type, every accent is bordered by jagged and sharp metallic lines thus giving the entire bag an "electric" effect. The use of the bronze metallic thread in this manner results in an energy which is very dynamic to the bag. It is amazing what this one detail can add to the visual appearance of the bag. There is black beaded work on the gold tone metal frame. These black beads comprise the pull tab which has a small cluster of pink beads. These pink clusters are also on the black beads of the frame as are gold beads along the bottom. The inside is a black satin like fabric. There is an open slip pocket as well as a pocket for a lipstick. These are trimmed in gold usually a sign of a high end bag. There isn't any maker's mark or identification but I think it was probably from France as it resembles french bags of the time in many ways. The inside is in great condition with only the slightest indications of use and age. The measurements are 9 1/2"w x 6"h x 1+"d. The bag is in wonderful condition again with just the slightest evidence of wear and age. This purse is a wonderful example of its kind. It transmits so much energy while at the same time it is exotic and intriguing. So "cool" in spite of its "hot" appearance. Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
