You will never find a bag like this in today's market. The skilled craftsmanship and unique style just doesn't exist today. If you value these qualities, then read on. The bag was made by Berger (Bros), a company based in NY who produced high end bags during the 1950's thru 1960's. It was a family affair with their head designer being Katalen Berger. They specialized in high end leather and suede and their designs were extraordinary with meticulous workmanship. There is not much information on this company, a familiar scenario with many mid century companies. The clutch bag has so much "going for it." It is large with a 10 1/2" width. The bag is covered with a thick wool(?) needlepoint that resembles a flat knotted carpet, sort of like a low berber rug. The front and the back are covered with black, silver and gold metallic threads or yarn. The needlework is designed in a geometric pattern of rows of squares on a black background. The squares are alternating silver and gold and the metallic threads used give the bag a sparkle and shine. Some rows have stylized squares with a smaller silver square in the middle of an outlined gold square. All this is eye popping and exciting. The pattern has a frenetic quality as well as an order to it. The body is trimmed with black silk(?) trim. The next element also is unexpected. The clasp is a clamper style strip that covers about 3/4 of the width of the bag. It lifts upwards and then goes backwards. It is trimmed in shiny gold tone medal. However, the pewter tone strip in between the gold border is beyond amazing. This strip is completely covered with etchings of people of "olde" dancing , looking and perhaps eating, all in groups along the surface of the metal. Each group has such detail that for example, in the dancing group, you can almost hear the music being played as the individuals stomp and swirl to the beat. You must look closely at these engravings to grasp how detailed and accomplished they are. Such a surprising element to a bag whose body is essentially a modern palette of shapes. The inside internal frame is also seen externally on the back part of the bag. It is a black silk that appears to have faded a bit and show some wear. The inside is covered with a shiny black silk fabric and there are twp open pockets, one trimmed with white silk. A black silk coin purse is included inside. "B B Berger Bags" is printed in gold lettering inside the bag. The inside is in great shape with little signs of age or use. The measurements of the bag are 10 1/2"w x 6 1/2"h x 1"d. Likewise the bag is in great shape with some evidence of age especially on the gold hardware. This is an amazing bag. Another example of wearable art indicative of an age when creativity knew no bounds and bags were diverse and exciting. The ying of the engraved plaque featuring figures from the past versus the yang of the modern design of the needlepoint create surprise and interest and definitely works. This is truly amazing one amazing bag! Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
