Purses from the early mid century with hand painted Persian tiles are exotic and unusual. This describes the lovely purse being offered today. It is small to medium sized and has an elongated shape being narrow and slender. There are curvy elements to it. It is a clutch. The silk fabric is a brocade featuring Persian figures all in different kinds of ancient boats and floating devices. Some boats are fulled with many characters while others seem to hold "royalty". The motif is highly detailed which is obvious when "staring" at the complexity of the scene. The background color is a grey which represents the water. The stitchery seems to be going in a horizontal direction. The colors used are mainly beige and black but tinges of pink and blue pastels compliment the monotone of the black and beige. The fabric is just amazing! The frame is an antiqued brass that is scalloped in shape and engraved on both sides. The engravings appear to simulate a "reed" type of grass, perhaps a connection to the water theme of the fabric. The clasp is center stage. It comes from behind and is huge. Its shape is curvaceous and there are round brass studs affixed to the surface. In the middle there is a hand painted enamel portrait done on a bovine bone. It is rectangular in shape and depicts a beautiful Persian princess (?) holding a flower. She is hand painted on a caramel background and her colors are intense. The panel appears to have a coat of lacquer on it and there is a slight sheen to the panel. The panel is beveled set into the clasp. There is depth and dimension to the clasp as well a fluidity and movement to the fabric. The inside is lined with a light beige grosgrain fabric. There are two open slip pockets and a coin/mirror folder (the mirror ha seen better days). The inside is very clean. I believe this bag to be French even though there are no markings. The bag measures 9" x 4 3/4"h x 1 1/2"d. The bag is in great condition. There are spots were it appears as though some thread "wear" is beginning. However, it is the nature of this fabric that it is not really visible and everything "sort of fits in." I am mentioning this for accuracy sake as it in no way detracts from the bag. This is a very classy bag. It is interesting and exotic. There are so many elements that come together to make a purse that is unusual and different. Absolutely gorgeous!
