Jacomo purses are gorgeous! However, that are not easy to come by and it is just as difficult to research the company. Luckily, Victoria Stowe, world known fashion expert, had provided information in her book "Exotic Skins Handbags". Jacomo was an upscale boutique located in NY at 25 E61st. They were only in existence for a short period of time, 1961-1964. James Kaplan and Heidener Laurenz specialized in one of a kind handbags that were imported from France and Italy. These bags were described as "ultra rare pieces of fashion distinction." My instincts told me that these bags were special and I have a few as part of my personal collection. This bag is unusual and most interesting. It is exceptional large as can be used as a clutch or a shoulder bag by using the chain which is housed inside. There is ruching mainly on the bottom of the bag. It is made of a creamy taupey colored leather that has a crackled appearance. There is a "free form" pattern of mottled mauve colors. This "blotchy" palette has a "tie dyed effect." Interestingly the only other color used against the ecru colored leather background is mauve. In fact, different hues of mauve are artistically used throughout ranging from a very pale pinkish hue to a deep brownish rose. The palette is different on the front and the back but both are abstract and intriguing. They seem to project dimension and depth. There is an energy to the design. To me, it is out of nature and the abstractions have a very organic appeal. You can get lost in it!!! There is a chunky and thick plastic deep brown (sort of tortoise looking) frame. When held up to the light it is semi transparent. There are two large knobs at the top to push to open the bag. An additional decorative accent is a large plastic "almost round" sphere attached right under the frame. This piece purposely has a piece taken out of it, thus not only drawing your eyes to it but providing an edginess and tension to the visual appearance. There is an optional quality chain with a drop of 18". The inside is lined with bright gold fabric. There is a bright silver internal frame outlining the inside of the bag. There are 2 open slip pockets and a small coin folder is included. The cloth "Jacomo" label is affixed inside. The inside is in great condition with only the most minimal signs of wear and age. The measurements of the bag are 12"w x 7 1/2"h x 1 1/2"d. The bag is in wonderful shape with only a few smudge marks on the plastic. Nothing significant. What a gorgeous bag! I don't think you will ever find another like it. The bag shows skill, artistic ability, creativity and at the same time, it is a practical bag for today's lady. A winner all around!
