Looking at this mid century handbag, I am amazed how fashion trends have changed over the years. This "funky" bag by Dorset Rex was probably used as a dressy daytime bag. Further thought and observation leads me to the conclusion that this unique "gem" would be perfect for today's formal occasion. Picture wearing it with a formal gown or dress....Wow! Definitely a head turner. In 1951 Dorset Rex was formed by merging the Rex company with Dorset Fifth Avenue. They specialized in quality and above average metal bags, including the popular "cage" bags. Their bags remain highly collectible and can be a bit "pricey" even today. This handbag is one of the most popular of their bag although it is not commonly found. It is made from gold tone metal that is designed in an open work herringbone pattern. Since there isn't any lining, the herringbone design is "see thru." The vertical "stripes" of the metal work are dominant. The bag is rectangular with many curves. The bag opens with a ball and knob closure. It opens with a "front door" so to speak which is attached by piano hinge type hardware (look at pictures). However,it is the sides of the bag that surprise and delight. Inside the bag it is revealed that the sides are made of wood. Over this wood are irregularly shaped plastic "jewels" placed in an intricate gold tone metal design accented with pearls. Each jewel is set in it own bezel and flowers and geometric shapes are raised above the surface producing depth and dimension. The sides are "funky", feminine and unique. What fun! There is a tortoise shell colored lucite arched handle with a drop of 3 1/2". As stated, the inside has no lining and the sides are wood. "Dorset Rex Fifth Avenue Design Pat. Pending" is inscribed in gold lettering on the wood panel. The bag measures 6 1/2"w x 7 1/2"h x 1 1/2"d. My iPhone 6 fits inside. The bag is in great condition with minimal indications of wear and age. This bag is a classic among collectors featured in Kate Dooner's "Plastic Handbags" on page 109. However, the bag is not only for collectors. If you have the "nerve" and desire to display your individuality this bag would be fabulous at that "black tie" function. Can you imagine?????
