They just don't make them like this anymore. That best describes this delightful French handmade beaded purse from the 1950's. It is a pleasure to look at having so much "going for it" in a feminine and subtle manner. It is rectangular in shape with the bottom being slightly wider than the top. It is entirely done in small white beads that are sewn in a circular swirling manner since the beads surround the tiny embroidered flowers. The flowers are varied in type and include pinkish roses, bluish forget me not and yellow daisies. They appear to be floating on the background. The embroidery is in the point de Beauvais style, more commonly known as tambour. The flowers are flatter than the beads thus providing subtle depth and dimension. The embroidery is on the front and the back. However, it is the frame that "steals the show". It is gold tone metal with openwork. It is decorated in cloisonne enamelware that is artistically and skillfully done. There are 9 accent pieces that come from the back and are fused together. The stylized design on each piece includes swirls and flowers. There are many colors used and the finished cloisonne is exceptional. The plain metal sections of the frame have engravings. There is a large pull with the same enameling that is used to open the bag. Such detailed cloisonne is rarely seen on purses of this genre. The is an open link gold tone carry chain that has a drop of 6". The inside is lined with an ivory colored satin. There is an open slip pocket and "Made in France Handmade is engraved in gold inside." The inside shows light indications of use and age but nothing major. The purse measures 6 1/2' w x 6"h x 1"d. This is a higher end purse from the mid century. Perfect for a garden party, perfect for the bride, perfect for anyone who wants a delightful and charming vintage purse.
