My collection of mesh bags was always just on display until I sold a mesh bag to a woman at an antique show. She saw an early Whiting and Davis bag and became so excited since the colors were perfect for her to wear at the upcoming wedding of her daughter. I was taken aback since I had never thought about wearing any of these early bags having left them for display purposes only. This lady said that she looked at the bag as a piece of jewelry that would accent and complement her mother of the bride gown. This woman obviously thought "out of the box" and since then I have worn these delightful bags to occasions whenever possible and received compliments galore. Whiting and Davis and Mandalian made mesh bags in the early part of the 20th century. Whiting and Davis bought Mandalian and continue to make modern mesh purses today. This particular bag is a typical mesh bag of the era except this bag is figural depicting stylized birds. The bag is small and it has a cathedral shaped frame and mesh fringe. It is made of small tiles which are attached to one another. They are enameled with a pattern that is has elements of the art nouveau and art deco styles. The pattern is abstract with the exception of the stylized birds. The background color is a soft light mint green and the colors of the design are hunter green, bright coral and black. The birds are large and face one another. They nicely fit into this unusual design. The frame is a darkened silver tone that has floral engravings. In fact, if you look closely the main flower on the frame resembles a lotus flower which is also a prominent flower on the mesh design. Amazing thought went into creating this purse and most others of this genre. The bag closes with a kiss clasp closure. There is a silver tone mesh fringe, a few strands are missing. The carry chain is also silver tone and it has a drop of 5 1/2". As is often the case, this mesh bag does not have its original lining. The mesh on the inside has maintained its bright silvery tone. The bag measures 7"h x 3 1/2"w.
The bag is in great shape. There might be some mesh tiles that are not connected at the side junction of the frame but this it very typical of these bags and is very minor. Otherwise the enameling is in wonderful condition. If you think of this purse not as a bag but as a piece of jewelry, you will discover how special and versatile it is. Although almost 100 years old, it is a very special bag that is a real "jewel." Condition: Excellent- VINTAGE Condition
