Handbags made from telephone cord as almost as popular today as they were in the 1940's thru 1950's. Their origin began during WWII when new materials needed to be found for women's handbags since the usual materials were needed for the war. They were made in a variety of colors, especially primary colors. These bags were bright and fun looking. Bags were also made in a combination of colors, namely navy and white, brown and beige and black and white. It is uncommon to see such bags in a solid color like this one. Since it is a solid color black, it still has a whimsical presence but it also is more serious and can be carried to many more occasions that the multi colored ones. It is a nice size, fairly large as these bags go. The shape fans out on the top and is narrower at the bottom. The coil makes a geometric design on the front and back. The coil wraps around creating concentric squares throughout the surface. It goes round and round making squares with rounded corners, big at the perimeter to small at the center. The cord is very textural and dimensional. It protrudes from the charcoal net fabric surface of the bag. There is black cord at the gussets and the very bottom. The bag opens and closes with a zipper that has a large cord ring as a pull tag. There is a carry handle with three rows of black cord carrying the entire handle. The handle attaches to the bag with metal rings and patent leather looking tabs. The inside is lined with a glossy black material. There is an open slip pocket but no mention of the manufacturer. The inside is very clean. Judging from my experience the quality of this telephone cord bag is on the upper end of the scale. The measurements of the bag are 12"w x 8"h x 2 1/4"d. The bag is in great shape with no issues to mention. I love the multi colored handbags of this type. However, I think the versatility of this bag is much greater than the others. This bag can be worn to a nice dinner, luncheon party or even a meeting while the others cannot. It has style, design and a panache that sets it apart from others. It is grown up but still has a bit of whimsy. I love this bag and you will too! Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
