Purses that have an art deco panache are always appealing, at least to me. This bag by Koret has that appeal. Richard Koret began the Koret company in 1929 to design, manufacture and distribute handbags, He went on to make high end and top quality bags thru the mid century. He was the licensee for other designer companies, such as Christian Dior, Hubert Givenchy and Pierre Cardin. They continue to be in business today designing a "new look" after a hiatus. I believe this bag to be an early Koret bag, perhaps from the 1930's or '40's. The inside coin purse is attached with a gentle chain, a characteristic of those times and an article in the Luggage and Leather Goods publication (1936) describes the Koret new line as having similar characteristics to this bag. The bag is made of a soft but durable silk satin fabric. It has an unusual shape although the bottom is wider than the top. It is a medium size and fits my iphone. It is a deep ebony black. There is a tight manipulation of the fabric (ruching) at the top of the bag across most of surface. This results in flowing pleats which create a distinct pattern. The body has a slightly "poofy" effect. The frame is exceptional. Here's where we see the deco influence. It is subtle and "not in your face." However,it is artistically designed with angles and straight lines. There are "peaks" which resemble castle architecture or the top of a picket fence. Most surfaces are covered in tiny marcasites , they encrust the outline of the peaks and the lines of the frame. The inside of these peaks is engraved with stylized floral elements which appear above the surface and give a bit of depth to the frame. Likewise the back of these peaks are also carved with a leafy design (only seen in high end bags). The frame is silver tone and it has ridges throughout. There is a silver tone clasp that comes from behind that opens and closes the bag. The entire frame is angular reflecting the peak motif. What a tribute to the art deco style! There are two silk rolled carry handles with a drop of 6". The inside is lined in a light tan silk (?) There is an open slip pocket lined in black silk (another indication of a luxury bag) and "Koret" is stamped in gold letters as well as the iconic gazelle figure. "Made of Pure Silk Satin" is also imprinted inside. There is a coin purse of the same fabric that is attached with a gentle gold tone chain. The inside does appear to have indications of wear and age commensurate with its age. Nothing especially serious with the exception of one pen mark, mentioned for accuracy. The measurements of the bag are 7 1/2"w (at its widest), 6" w (at the top), 7"h x 3"d. The purse is in great condition. With the exception of the noted age on the inside, there isn't anything to note. As time goes by, I have begun to appreciate Koret bags more and more. There is something wonderful about each bag (sort of like Leiber), you just have to look closely for it. This is a great deco bag, a perfect accompaniment to any swanky outfit.
