"The most Dalien person I've ever met" said Salvador Dali in 1958 about Onik Sahakian after meeting him for the first time. Thus began a friendship that lasted over 20 years. Onik and his family had to leave Russia after the revolution and eventually ended up in Tehran, Iran considered a safe haven for the family. He began his growth as an artist by becoming a dancer at an early age and performed for many world wide audiences. He mastered the piano and also began painting and drawing. He moved to NYC where his paintings were on exhibit at Rockefeller Center for over a year. He began to design jewelry in the 1970's and designed pieces for Dali and his wife and even for Pat Nixon. However this was just around the time of Watergate and his jewelry career did not take off. He continued to paint and it is within this domain, that he found much success combining Dalien influences into everyday scenes. His work is featured in major museums throughout the world.
This particular piece presents the Mughal influence that was a part of Onik's life. The necklace consists of a thick gold tone serpentine chain and a huge ornate pendant. The pendant is a shiny Byzantine like gold tone. It is heavily detailed with engravings that are deeply carved. The top portion of the pendant is round and domed. Besides the raised work, there is a rectangular emerald colored glass cabochon set in a bezel setting. At the bottom of the pendant there is filigree rod with lacy filigree caps and two raised salmon colored stones that are marbleized. The stones are prong set. In the middle is a roaring lion's face with his jaws wide open. Inside the jaws is a smaller emerald green cabochon. The lion's face is intricate and skillfully carved. There is depth and dimension throughout the pendant. It is opulent and grand. There is a identification cartouche on the back with the ONIK trademark. The pendant measure 4"h x 3"at its widest x 3/4" at its deepest. The gold tone chain is chunky and substantial. It closes with a round spring clasp. The chain measures 18 1/2" in total length including the clasp. The necklace is is fine condition without any issues to mention. It is substantial but light to wear. What a piece! What a designer! A man for all seasons creates a statement necklace for all seasons. WOW! Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
