Helene Angeli designed handbags in France that were described as "functional couture art" beginning in the 1980's. She has designed bags with diverse elements such as classical fabrics, exotic decoration and fun motifs. Many bags are museum quality and are actually show cased in fashion museums. This particular bag is an early design and although it is quite "tame", it is nevertheless statement making. It was bought at Saks Fifth Ave in Beverly Hills. It is a shoulder bag, the straps can be tucked inside to wear as a clutch. It is square in shape. It has a large fold over flap that covers most of the front of the bag. The flap and the back are covered with pony hair that is dyed to resemble leopard fur. The background is a light tan and there are specs of darker shades of brown and black. The front flap has a large cut out on the bottom left corner. This effects a sense of creative imbalance, adding interest and surprise to the bag. There is open metal filigree work on two corners of the front flap. The filigree work is dainty and feminine. There is a huge black leather bow in the middle of the front of the bag. The leather is of a high quality and is extremely soft. There are two tassels which suspend from gold tone decorative accents. The bow is also placed on a slant . This relates to that creative imbalance that was presented before. The gussets, bottom and under the front flap is that soft leather of the bow. The bag closes with a snap closure under the flap. There is a black leather shoulder strap with a drop of 23." The inside is lined with a satin black fabric and there is a bronze satin open pocket inside. "Helene Angeli Made in France" is imprinted in gold lettering on the under side of the flap. The inside is in great condition without significant evidence of age or wear. The measurements of this bag are 7 1/2"w x 7 1/2"h x 2"d. The bag looks wonderful. There are a few spots where the pony hair might be thinner, but the "fur" blends so nicely that you can barely see it. It is mentioned for accuracy. This bag can be dressed up or down. It is unusual and combines elements of femininity (the bow, the filigree accents) with elements of danger and strength (the leopard skin print). In addition the imbalance emits creative tension and surprise and adds to the uniqueness of this fabulous bag. Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
