Bags with engraved plaques were created mid century and were and still are, one of the most sought bags of that time. This type of "wearable art" is especially special when the bag was designed by Harry Rosenfeld, a mid century designer of luxury and high end bags. These bags can go for hundreds of dollars and are usually "snatched" up rather quickly. This bag is delightful in every way. Its shape is unusual, being a sort of "tear drop" shape. It has a front flap where the intricately engraved plaque is situated. The bag is an ivory colored soft and buttery leather, probably kid glove leather. It is a pleasure to touch. There are subtle veins in the leather. The plaque is engraved in gold tone shiny brass and the plaque is circular, having a diameter of 3 1/2." The scene is raised and Nicolas Lancret is engraved on the shiny gold tone rim of the plaque. Lancret was a French painter who depicted high comedy which reflected tastes and manners of French society of regent Orleans. The plaque is also hallmarked with the name of "R. Wicker Gr." The plaque is titled "Lancret Plaisirs Champetres." It depicted figures representing French aristocracy having a picnic(?) in a pastoral setting. The figures and landscape are intricately detailed and raised. The dimensional result is complex with the figures appearing on the forefront while the setting appears to recede into the background. The skill needed to create such a palette is remarkable. There is a carry strap with a drop of 11". Lifting the flap reveals the body of the bag including a brushed brass frame. There is a lift up clasp to open/shut the bag. The back of the flap and the inside lining is done in a soft ivory satin. There is an open slip pocket and the Rosenfeld name is inscribed onto the fabric along with the iconic fan. There are some minor indications of age on the lining, most which appear to be glue seepage. The measurements of the bag are 6"w x 8"h x 1 1/2"d. The bag is in great condition. The outside is flawless with the exception of one pencil point mark on the leather. This is a rare and unusual purse which actually is a "work of art. Whoever gives it a deserved second look will undoubtedly exclaim "WOW" with just cause. Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
