This minaudiere represents one of the most popular styles of Leiber "little treasures." As the story has it, the metal on the first metal bags was so bad that a disguise was necessary. So covering the bag with Swarovski crystals was the chance solution. Not only did this hide the damage but at the same time, it enhanced its beauty. The end result was so popular that even when the plating technique improved, Leiber continued to cover the metal with various designs of crystals. This particular purse is called the "chatelaine" since it is similar to the little purses worn by women years ago attached to their waist bands. It held all the small necessities of the day, as does the Leiber version (no cell phones!). The bag is absolutely gorgeous. The metal of this chatelaine is a brushed Florentine gold. It is "puffy" at the bottom and bulbous. The Florentine metal has a few darker streaks but that is how this metal wears over the years and is not a fault. In fact, it is very faint on this particular purse. I have several of these bags in my own collection (I just love this "antique" style!) and all have this faint streaking. In fact I called Leiber many years ago when I purchased my first one and they informed me it is the natural "aging" of the metal. The purse has a thick "hem" encrusted with Swarovski crystals of varying sizes. Emerging from the bottom are "spikes" of crystals rising almost to the top. The frame is curved and mildly scalloped and it also is encrusted with crystals. The area on top of the purse has thin rows of crystals that follow the shape of the collar of the bag. The crystals shine with a brilliance that is only achieved by Swarovski stones. The bag opens and closes with push down closure. There is a decorative gold tone chain with a drop of 15". The chain can be hidden inside and the purse held as a clutch. The inside is lined with a gold tone kid leather. The Judith Leiber signature is signed right on the leather. This appears to be an early Leiber purse. The inside is in great condition with very minor signs of wear. This gem measures 5"x 5 1/4" x 2"d. It comes with a dust bag and a mirror. The purse is in wonderful condition without any issues to mention. There is one crystal missing at the very bottom by the hinge. The chatelaine is breathtakingly beautiful and one look explains why it is one of the most popular Leiber minaudieres ever produced. To be enjoyed forever!!!!
