In the 1920's King Tut's tomb was unearthed and the fashion and jewelry world was set ablaze. Fashionistas demanded items that highlighted this genre and designers were quick to comply. This craze continued thru mid century and Hattie Carnegie was on board with stylized jewelry items. Usually these pieces were very colorful combining the colors (turquoise, dark blue, red) that represented this ancient time. This piece is very different and is a "softer" representation of those times. It has a deco vibe as does most Egyptian Revival pieces . It is very interesting looking and is a refreshing alternative to the bold colored pieces. The focal point is a pendant of a pharaoh's head. It is done in a oxidized metal resembling the color of pewter, as it is a deep dark grey. The pharaoh has his kingly headdress and he is etched with great detail and precision. He is not flat but is raised against the sides of his headdress. There are folds in the background representing the sides of his magnificent headdress. He has a very serious expression, obviously a no nonsense man! The necklace is also unique. It consists of round saucer likes spheres that are made of anodized metal that is the color of peacock blue. Slightly larger light grey spheres are also on the strand. It has a coiled effect. There are glass beads that connect the necklace to the closure which is a hook and eye. The Hattie Carnegie cartouche is on the back of the pendant. The piece measures 16" excluding the hook. The large spheres measure 1/2" wide while the smaller ones are 1/4". The pendant measures 2"h x 2 1/4"h. The piece is in great condition without signs of wear or age. What a piece! In its own muted manner, it makes quite a statement. Different, deco styled, and crafted with great detail, this piece is sure to turn heads, even those without such a "regal" head piece!
