William Hobe, son of the founder of Hobe jewelry, supplied Flo Ziegfeld, producer of the Ziegfeld Follies, with baubles for the ladies costumes as well as glitzy jewelry for adornment. Hence the term "costume jewelry" came into being. The Hobe company continued to partake in the costume jewelry boom that occurred during the span between the world wars. This five strand Majorca faux pearl necklace has never been worn since the original identification tag is still attached to the piece. The faux pearls are on the small side measuring 5mm. The color of the pearls are a soft off white. They are all perfectly round. They shine and have a luster to them. The pearls are hand knotted on silk. The focal point of the necklace is the ornate clasp that is done in a textured gold plating. It is a large round circle with a diameter of 1 3/4". The medallion is covered with various sized bezel set rhinestones and lapis blue glass round stones. The medallion piece gives the necklace a stylized modern sputnik look, a popular look of the '50's. The medallion which serves as the clasp features a push down tab on one side of the circle that fits into a slot on the other side. It clicks shut. The clasp is marked "Hobe" on the back. The necklace is in great condition without any signs of age or wear. The necklace measures 20" long. This necklace is appropriate for any Ziegfeld girl as well as a gal of today. A definite statement maker for a bargain price. Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
