This elegant purse comes straight out of the "White House!!!! That is the "White House that was a luxury and legendary store in San Francisco which opened in 1885 and closed in 1965. They sold exquisite items mostly from France. This evening bag, circa 1950's is a charming and exceptional example of French imports of the day. Its shape has rounded curves and it is the widest in the middle tapering upwards and downwards. A gorgeous and aristocratic silk brocade covers the entire bag. It has a stylized floral pattern and its ecru color background is accented with the design done in a neutral grey taupe. It has tight gathers on the top under the frame and this results in several gentle pleats. The color has uniformly oxidized (it was originally a bit lighter) so that the purse has a wonderful consistent patina. The frame is an etched gold tone metal upon which there are three rows of rhinestones. These stones are multi faceted and individually prong set. The frame forms an arc and there are tiny gold bead clusters at the ends. The bag opens with an ornate pull tag that is scrolled and has rhinestones and gold beads. It closes with a "snap." There is a dainty carry chain with a drop of 4". The inside is lined with an off white satiny fabric. There is an open slip pocket. The original mirror is inside. The words "Made in France for the White House San Francisco" are printed inside in gold letters. The inside is very, very clean. The measurements are 7 1/2" w (at the widest), 5 1/2"h x 1 1/2"d. This small gem is in near mint condition. I doubt it was used a lot and it was well cared for. It would certainly be among the best if invited to a state dinner at the White House!!!!!
