This is an early Leiber bag, circa 1960-70's, bought at Saks Fifth Avenue. It is a staple for every lady's closet since it is classic, timeless and can be dressed up or down. Yet it has the Leiber panache. The purse is a nice size with enough room to store all of today's necessities. It is rounded and has a curved foldover flap. It is made of a deep black satin material that is not too shiny. All hardware is shiny gold tone. The main focal point is the elaborate larger pull down clasp that opens and closes the bag. It measures 2 1/4"long by 5/8"w x 1/2"d. It has a curved and scrolled shape. The backing is a textured gold tone upon which there is highly detailed metal work depicting the head of a sea creature or serpent. Underneath this figure, there is more sculptured metal work resembling a slithering snake. The piece has many curves and once one looks at it closely the detail and craftsmanship can be appreciated. It has the Leiber signature in a cartouche on the back of this piece. So Leiberesque!!! There is a small hole in the foldover flap with a protruding round knob upon which this ornate closure rests when the bag is closed. To open the bag this piece is pulled down to release the closing mechanism. There is a large and shiny gold tone bar with a hinge that connects the flap to the bag. Two thin satin handles provide for the carry strap. There is a drop of 9" although the straps are 11" long. The inside is lined with a black satin material. There is a zippered pocket. There are 2 open slip pockets and 1 zippered pocket. The gold identification metal panel with Judith Leiber's signature (it is an early one) is affixed to the lining as is an oval black leather label stating that the bag was made by Judith Leiber for Saks Fifth Avenue. The inside is exceptionally clean. The measurements of the bag are 8 1/2"w x 7"h x 1 1/2"d. The bag is in great condition especially since this is such an early bag. The outside of the bag is virtually spotless, underneath the closure there is slight fading on the fabric (only seen when the closure is lifted). The inside has a little plate wear on the gold tone inner rod and there once might have been a glue issue affixing the lining to the bag. None of this is significant but mentioned for accuracy. A wonderful evening purse to be worn to a formal affair or any dressy occasion. It is timeless and simply elegant. And then there is the unexpected sea creature.....who else but Leiber would think of this? Just wonderful!!!!! Condition: Excellent - VINTAGE Condition
