Back to the '40's. This deco purse with a back wrist strap seems to be straight out of a '40's film noir movie set. It is "back to the past." THe purse is rectangular in shape and has a foldover flap. It is not hard cased but is flexible It is covered with a sturdy textured fabric that has a pattern of small curving lines. These squiggle lines remind me of small "minnows" swimming in a pond. (I know I see some crazy things in a purse). The fabric is tactile adding interest to the bag. The color of the fabric is a reddish dark brown sort of a dark cordovan. Texture of the fabric creates an appearance of "reddish brown on reddish brown". There is slight fading to the fabric since the color under the flap is slightly darker. The most wonderful feature of the bag is a jewelry quality deeply carved bakelite bar, similar to the bakelite bar pins of the times. The bar is long and slender measuring 4"w x 1 1/4"h. It is not flat but curved. It has a butterscotch color otherwise called cream color. The deep carvings create a large starburst in the middle as well as other deep carvings throughout including a coiled effect at the ends. This is a wonderful accent to the purse. It is situated not in the middle of the bag, but on a slant on the left side of the flap. Another interesting and creative touch. I do not know how the bar is attached to the bag but it is very secure and there isn't any pin mechanism. A pin like this commonly retails to up to $100 on its own. The back has the aforementioned wrist strap. The clutch closes with a snap closure. When the flap is opened, there is an additional slot compartment before the inside compartment. The inside is very clean without wear and usage signs. There are two open pocket. One has a mirror that has separated from its fabric background. The mirror does show age and needs resilvering. There is a cloth tag inside stating that this bag was manufactured under the" Ladies Handbag Code Authority." There are identification numbers on this label. THe entire bag is in great condition. The color is consistent with the exception of being a bit darker UNDER the flap. THe measurements are 10 1/2" x 6 3/4". Being a fan of anything deco and anything bakelite, this purse, to me, is the "cat's meow." It is classic and timeless yet obviously deco, it has jewelry quality ornamentation and it is in a color that is rich and deep. What a wonderful piece of history!!!!
