Known as a "flying flower", this Pauline Rader brooch of a butterfly is as beautiful as the most beautiful blossom. Pauline Rader produced jewelry for a very limited time and her pieces are sought after by collectors. Her designs were diverse ranging from items that simulated antiquities to chunky modern pieces. This piece, circa 1970's, simulates a glorious flying butterfly. It actually vibrates and its wings flutter with any movement on behalf of the wearer. This type of pin is called a trembler pin and they are rarer than your typical pin. And what fun they are!!!! This large butterfly is done in gold tone metal that is mostly cut out and resembles filigree. There are two large upper wings and two smaller lower wings surrounding a body that is solidly (not open work) done. All parts are ornately done with jewels and faux pearls. The upper wings have small round ruby red stones in addition to two marquis shaped red stones. There are two tiny Kelly green cabochons as well as an abundant amount of faux pearls. THe bottom wings have many green stones in addition to red ones. All stones are placed in a delicate and intricate pattern. The body of the butterfly has rows of tiny faux pearls and its upper part is a large prong set faux pearl. THe eyes are shiny glass stones and the antennae end in two ruby bezel set glass stones. As mentioned, the wings flutter and vibrate with movement. There are hidden springs allowing this movement. The left wing appears to flutter more than the other wing. The two upper wings "fly" while the bottom wings are stationary. The butterfly closes on the back with a pin that anchors into a safety closure. There is an imprinted number on the straight bar on the back on the pin as well as the oval cartouche stating "Pauline Rader." The piece measures almost 3" at its widest by 1 1/2"h. There are no issues with this pin, it is in gorgeous condition. Worn on a white dress or a black blazer, this "moving" pin is so much fun as well as being beautiful. Perhaps one day it will "spread its wings" and fly away. Just keep your eye on it!! COndition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
