Offered today is an exquisite quality antique painting of Sir Peter Paul Rubens, which was painted well over 100 years ago as a likeness of the original self portrait done in 1623. This is an original work of art - one of a kind.
In over 35 years of selling very special antique pieces, I just couldn’t let this one go when I found it. It’s being sold out of my private, personal collection.
The meticulous artistry and vivid detail exhibited in the painting is incredibly similar to the original (a magazine photograph of which, found tucked inside the back of the frame, will be included).
The vivid colors of the artwork enhance the expressive features which are very finely rendered.
I believe the painting is a watercolor. Since I’m not an art dealer, I am not sure about the medium.
This amazing work of art is framed, under glass, in a deep, gilt frame from the 19th century.
The frame measures 10.25 inches (26 cm) X 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) X 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cm) deep.
The artwork itself measures 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) X 5.25 inches (13.3 cm)
There is a wire at the back of the frame from which to hang this painting.
This rare treasure is in excellent antique condition with only minor wear commensurate with age and use; a bit of wear on the square corner edges at the back
The original self-portrait can be seen in Windsor Castle which is overseen by Queen Elizabeth II.
About Sir Peter Paul Rubens: Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat. He is considered the most influential artist of Flemish Baroque tradition. In addition to being one of the most well known artists of his time, and producing work through most of Europe, he was knighted by Charles I. Rubens was also a highly trusted adviser in Spain and the Netherlands during a twelve year strife between the two countries.
Exceptionally rare and coveted piece of art – a great addition to any collection
