A Victorian memorial or mourning brooch with woven hair. Gold but unmarked, as is so often the case, because they were made directly for the family of the deceased. Tested as gold but it has proved difficult to define the exact standard. British gold can be as low as 9ct.
It carries the words IN MEMORY OF in black enamel, and there is some loss to the enamel just around the edge of the central locket, but not on the wording or other decorative flourishes. It has a plain C clasp and a loop on the back for a safety chain. It measures 1.8 inches across and has a pin which extends beyond the diameter of the brooch in typical Victorian fashion.
A classic of its kind.
