An unusual match box cover made of brass, and featuring three of the suits of playing cards, spades, diamonds and clubs - but no hearts. They are portrayed quartered on a shield as in a heraldic device.
Something of the unsophisticated way in which this is made makes me think it is trench art, made during World War 1 by the serving or wounded soldiers from scrap brass picked up on the battlefield.
Approximately 2 1/2 by 1 3/4 by 3/4 inches - 6 x 4.5 x 2cm
I have polished this lightly .
