This scarce book is a first edition of the first biography in English of the Marquis de Sade. Part 1 covers his life and Part 2 his works. Part 2 summarises each of the works, and at times quotes extensively from them in French.
Part 3 contains General Considerations and Estimate, including the influence on the author of the times in which he lived and his personal circumstances, and part 4 contains an extensive bibliography.
The tone of the book is generally disparaging and critical of de Sade's works but to some extent defends the man:
"The real point is this: de Sade wrote about all these things, he did not do them."
The foxing that afflicts the title page (see photos) has had little or no effect on the rest of the book. The spine is faded but the book itself is clean and tight.Approx 8.75" by 5.75"; 238pp.
