Vintage Mid-Century Sigi Pineda Sterling Silver Green Chrysoprase Brooch PIn
Exquisite handmade sterling silver brooch by the modernist master silversmith, Sigi Pineda of Taxco. A lovely green chrysoprase stone is held in the mouth like opening of this abstract fish or whale. During the mid 1950’s Pineda made a series of fish brooches.
Measures 2 1/4 inches wide by 1 1/8 inch high; weight is a sturdy 22.4 grams. The stone is about 3/8 inch. Signed Sigi and Taxco in two adjoining circles, Eagle 36, along with sterling and the design number, 858. There is the residue of a price tag on the back. Condition is excellent with no damage and only light wear consistent with age.
Sigi Pineda spent his teens traveling Mexico, working in various silver tallers or workshops where he acquired his skills. He worked for Los Castillo for 3 years and for Margot de Taxco for 4. He set up his own shop at age 23 in order to create the modernist designs he favored.
