Sterling silver bird brooches (this one looking very much like a preening dove) were popular in the early 1940s. You may notice it is striking similar to the Coro Norseland line and works by Georg Jensen. This unsigned oval pin is simply stamped "STERLING" and a hand etched (what looks to be) "6 - 7612" below. It has a fine patina upon a boldly textured, thick sterling silver base. Tail feathers and foliage are particularly well defined. The bird's body and framework are slightly raised. An overall arts and crafts look.
The brooch measures about 2 1/8 inches x 1 7/16 inches with a maximum 1/4 inch profile or thickness. Weight of the brooch is approximately 20 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. No dents or improper bends to silver. No polishing done. Pin shaft has some minor bends, not affecting function. Locking wheel strong and secure. No damage / no repairs. Age appropriate wear and patina. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of brooch is stamped "STERLING" underscored by hand etched characters: possibly "6-7612". Circa 1940s - perhaps earlier.
