The Fashioncraft Jewelry Company was founded in New York City in 1942 by partners Robert Levey (Levy), Irving Landsman, and David Jaffe. It's name was changed to Robert Originals, Inc. in 1960, also using the trademarks "Robert" and "Original by Robert" on it's jewelry. An ad campaign in the 1940s coined it's creations as dramatic modern antique, an appropriate description for many early Robert pieces. You may notice a strong resemblance to Miriam Haskell jewelry although an association between the two makers has not been confirmed. Robert Originals, Inc. closed it's doors in 1979.
The necklace and earrings set presented features a spectacular array of milk (white) glass beads, rhinestone rondelles, faceted glass crystal beads, seed beads, chaton and baguette rhinestones, turquoise colored beads, rose montee rhinestones and a molded glass rosette (necklace), all hand wired onto Russian gold tone filigree bases embellished with golden foliage. The uncanny likeness to Haskell is readily apparent, including the highest quality design, materials, and craftsmanship.
The necklace is adjustable to about 16 inches with bilateral bead chains, crystal bead charmed extension chain and hook closure. It's asymmetrical center medallion, loaded and layered with the above components, is approximately 1 3/4 inches x 1 1/2 inches with a generous 11/16 inch profile or height. Climber style clip earrings are about 1 1/2 inches 1 inch. Largest necklace rhinestone is about 9 millimeters; bilateral white chain beads, approximately 6 millimeters. Weight of the necklace and earrings set is about 56 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All beads free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. All rhinestones intact, retaining sparkle, "whiteness" and relevant color. Milk glass beads free from stains or discoloration. All wiring secure. Russian gold tone finish intact. Some gold tone finish wear to reverses only of necklace / earrings filigree backing. Bilateral necklace chains appear secure. Earring clips strong and secure. Clean, complete and correct. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Each original earring clip is signed in familiar script: "Robert". The necklace is not signed. It is a definite part of this set. Circa 1940s-1950s.
