In the 1950s, Luca Razza (Raz-Mer Casting) began creating raw castings for Weiss, Rice-Weiner, Alice and other jewelers. Later in the decade, after his tenure with Coro, he left to form Ronnie Jewelry in 1958. There he made pieces for Capri, Carnegie, Kramer, Marvella and Pakula and his former employer, Coro. He created a process that molded plastics or resins to closely resemble faux stones. Some of the best examples of this technique are exemplified in his zodiac series of the late '60s - early '70s.
Presented is the lion (Leo) pendant necklace. A resin face insert imitating faux marble is accented with gold tone eyes, nose and kingly mane. Both matte and shiny gold tone links form the original bilateral chain with spring ring closure. (We love the way the different textures in the chain pick up the same two finishes in the pendant.) These large, impressive pieces with resin inserts are signatures of Razza's earlier work. Though this particular example is unsigned, it is undeniably Razza's work.
The pendant (lion's head) portion of the necklace is a generous 4 inches x 3 inches at it's widest with a 1 inch profile or height. The bilateral chains total a wearable length of about 28 inches with spring ring closure. Weight of the necklace is an impressive, approximate 142 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. Faux stone free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks with nice texturing / marbling. Gold tone eyes, nose and mane securely in place. Gold tone finish intact, front and back and all chain links. Minimal wear on tip of nose. No dents, improper bends, crush or collapse. Necklace clasp secure. Extremely clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
There is a plaque on the reverse bottom that contains characters that are unreadable. It is a confirmed Luca Razza work. Circa late '60s-early '70s.
