Hobe', a family run company from about 1927-1995, supplied jewels for the famous Ziegfeld Follies review as well as numerous television and movie productions. Of special interest are it's "sterling years" from the 1940s. The firm created intricate and elaborate designs in sterling and gold plated or gold washed (vermeil) silver. Bows were a favorite theme along with botanicals, including dramatic foliage and floral arrangements, as exemplified in the brooch presented. Embellishments sometimes included glass simulated stones.
The brooch presented features a bouquet of floral blossoms tied up with an oversized bow with robust loops and ribbons. Theatrical leaf spears and stems jut out at top and bottom. A large flower blooms at center. An exuberant art moderne influence is evidenced in Hobe's sterling work from this era. A bit of fun and fantasy with classic jewelry designs.
Our featured sterling silver pin measures a generous approximate 3 3/4 inches x 2 1/4 inches at it's widest point with a 1/2 inch profile or height. Weight of the brooch is about 28 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All soldering secure. No dents, improper bends, crush or collapse. The brooch retains it's desirable, age commensurate patina -- it's personality and character intact. No polishing has been done, as most of our buyers prefer. If you like your silver bright and shiny, a polishing cloth can fulfill your wish. Pin mechanism secure. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of the brooch is signed: "Hobe'" "STERLING" and "DESIGN PAT'D". It dates circa 1940s.
