Sash pins. The beginning of the costume jewelry movement. Conceived in the later part of the 19th century, the brooches were generally quite large and embellished with embossing, and applied decoration. Many were in brass and featured bezel set, faceted glass stones -- faux amethyst -- favorite during the Victorian era. The brooch presented includes all of the above with the addition of curled, crimped edges, giving the brooch a sled like profile. Wonderful vine like applications swirl around the diagonally set, oval faux amethyst stone. The glass stone is bezel set, unfoiled and open backed -- typical of the period.
The brooch measures about 3 1/4 inches x 1 3/4 inches with a 9/16 inch profile or height. Purple glass stones is approximately 18 millimeters x 14 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is about 32 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. Simulated amethyst free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. Bezel secure. Applied decoration intact -- solder secure. Brooch retains shape with no dents or improper bends. Pin shaft straight, strong and secure. Original, correct simple C clasp intact. Brooch retains desirable, time acquired patina. No polishing nor abrasive cleaning has been done. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
The brooch is not signed, as was the general practice. It dates from late 19th century to the early 20th.
