Turquoise enameled foliage, brass tone floral rosettes, beading, garlands and roping interspersed with colorful purple and green flat back rhinestones showcase a magnificent center amethyst art glass stone in this late Nouveau - early Deco pot metal brooch. Circa 20s-'30s, the brooch, perhaps used as a sash pin, utilizes elements from both movements -- design, materials, colors, findings, and construction suggesting a crossover piece. A superb example of period casting, stone, and enameling techniques.
The brooch measures a generous 2 7/8 inches x 2 1/2 inches with a maximum 1/2 inch profile or height. Faceted glass, faux amethyst oval is approximately 30 millimeters x 21 millimeters. Flat back rhinestones are about 4 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is a hefty, approximate 56 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. Enameling shows wear consistent with age -- maintaining a vast majority. Brass tone finish shows substantial, age appropriate patina. All flat back rhinestones intact, retaining colors and brilliance. No discolored, dull or dead stones. Center, pronged, unfoiled and open back set glass stone free from abrasions, chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. Beautiful purple color. (Please note that color analysis is subjective and that colors / intensity will vary on monitors and / or in person.) All components secure. No dents, improper bends or collapse. Pin shaft has slight bends not affecting function. Pin mechanism secure. All findings appear correct and consistent with age of piece. Extremely clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
The brooch does not appear to be signed. It does, however have an interesting dotted pyramid or triangle design around reverse's outer edge. It may be an element of design and / or indicate a particular maker. Research and reverences suggest a 1920s-1930s vintage.
