Schiaparelli. Or to her friends simply Schiap. You know the facts and figures and, of course, anecdotes of the rivalry with Coco Chanel. Schiaparelli's legacy includes a cache of vintage jewels, valued and cherished for not only their beauty but the history they hold. Around the 1950s, costume jewelry came into it's own, appreciated on it's own terms. Art as well as accessories. Schiaparelli was on the front line, pushing the envelope to it's limit. One of her '50s-'60s vintage set is presented here.
Peridot colored chaton rhinestones pair with aurora borealis marquise rhinestones in peridot and yellow with faint hints of amethyst to showcase striated art glass, faux peridot opal cabochons. Three hinged medallions, comprise the heavily plated gold tone necklace -- each centered with a simulated opal cab surrounded by sparkling rhinestones. Marquise rhinestones trail up the bilateral chains to a hook style closure and chaton rhinestone charmed connection end. Matching button style clip earrings mimic the theme with a crescent of peridot and ab rhinestones enveloping an imitation peridot opal. As you would suspect, colors, stone treatments, arrangement and coordination are pure Schiaparelli.
The necklace is adjustable to about 15 1/2 inches. Decorative center spans approximately 4 1/4 inches x 1 1/2 inches at it's widest point. Earrings are about 1 inch across. Faux opal cabs are approximately 15 millimeters; marquises about 10 millimeters x 5 millimeters. Weight of the necklace and earrings demi is approximately 70 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components and stones original and intact. The rhinestones remain brilliant and full of life and color. No cloudy, discolored or dead stones. Spectacular sparkle for a set this age -- or any age, for that matter. Faux opals retain luster and glow with the greens, yellow, and purples playing off the aurora borealis rhinestones beautifully. No chips, cracks or breaks to stones. Gold tone finishes intact, fronts and backs. Earring clips do have gold tone wear, mainly on the inside of clips / handling and contact points. Clips are strong and secure. All soldering and connections secure. A clean set. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of the necklace is signed within a rectangular cartouche in familiar script" "Schiaparelli" no copyright symbol. Each original earring clip is signed in script" "Schiaparelli" no copyright symbol. Each earring also includes the patent number for the design (look) of the clips. We date the set from the mid '50s to the early '60s.
