Karl Lagerfeld, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1938, is credited with breathing life into the aging House of Chanel in Paris, updating and energizing the iconic fashion empire. He is also associated with Fendi, Chloe, and Balmain. He designs his own jewelry as well as employing freelance artists to create couture collections.
The earrings presented, circa 1980s, are signature Lagerfeld, oversized and runway worthy. Oblong hexagons in satin or Florentine finished gold tone are center set with baroque simulated pearl cabochons. From these shields, huge glass baroque imitation pearls are suspended. Vestiges of Chanel -- reconstruction by Lagerfeld.
Big, bold, powerful earrings meant to be seen and remembered.
The earrings measure about 2 1/4 inches x 1 inch at their widest. Top cab is approximately 12 millimeters; bottom dangle a whopping 22 millimeters! Weight of the earrings pair is a substantial 64 grams. Heavyweights, to be sure.
