Influenced by the Victorian, as well as Art Nouveau style, this transitional sash pin, circa early 1900s-1915, has a predominately Arts & Crafts theme. From it's hammered brass frame, each side with a flower blossom accent, to it's wonderful bat-wing / butterfly bezels securing the huge faux amethyst stone, our sash pin emits a personality all it's own. The center faceted, purple glass chaton, unfoiled and open backed, rests high upon a built up setting. The butterfly or batwing "arms" reach up, acting as prongs to secure the stone. Dimension and detail are outstanding. Materials and workmanship, top notch.
We think of sash pins as an introduction to statement costume jewelry. They were big and showy, meant to impress as much as secure. Most were set with outrageously sized glass, faux stones for that burst of color and shine. Sash pins were the openers for the show stoppers of costume jewelry's golden age.
The brooch measures a generous approximate 3 inches x 1 7/8 inches with a 3/4 inch profile. The center glass stone is about 30 millimeters -- that's nearly 1 1/4 inches across! Weight of the pin is about 56 grams.
Condition is excellent / near pristine vintage. All components original and intact. Hammered brass has a soft, warm patina. No polishing or abrasive cleaning has been done. All applied embellishments remain securely soldered to frame. No dents or improper bends to frame. Glass amethyst stone remains free of chips, nicks, cracks or breaks -- amazing for a piece this age. Very minor feathering of facets, noticeable under magnification only. Nice, even amethyst color. Pin shaft has the usual bends from it's many years of use. It "locks" securely within the simple c clasp -- standard closures for sash pins of this era. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Near pristine vintage.
Like most sash pins of this era, the brooch is not signed. It is obviously the work of skilled designers / craftspeople. It dates circa 1900-1915.
