Fly me to the moon...or at least to the nearest Coro collection! Put a bug in your ear, a fly in your ointment -- whatever it takes to nab Coro's gold over sterling silver insect pin. Whimsical, with adorable, awkward aerodynamics, he comes complete with "crittercal" character. Comic relief in an oh, so serious world.
During the War years, metal was strictly rationed. Adolph Katz, head of Coro's design department, turned to sterling to fill the jewelry void. The insect pictured, in sterling vermeil, is embellished with green and yellow enamel accents on it's wings. Black enamel tips his antennae and extremities. His body takes on a Deco / Machine Age appearance, akin to an engine cowl. His head is a purple faceted art glass oval (unfoiled and open backed) while his eyes sparkle with clear rhinestone chatons.
The bug measures about 3 inches from tip to tip with a 2 3/4 inch wing span. Profile or height is approximately 3/8 inch. The oval glass stone is about 10 millimeters x 8 millimeters. Weight of the sterling brooch is approximately 14 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All gold over sterling intact with no wear through, scratches or abrasions. Bright gold, lustrous finish that has not been polished or abrasively cleaned. No dents or improper bends. Enamel intact with perhaps a wee bit missing from extremity tips. Art glass stone free from chips, cracks or breaks. Rhinestones intact with sparkle. The pin catch is a simple C clasp. Please note the photo. There is no locking wheel and I'm not sure there ever was. The pin shaft fits snugly within the C clasp and seems to hold securely. Clean and ready to fly.
The brooch is signed on it's reverse in familiar script "Coro" and in block caps: "STERLING". Research and available reference materials indicate that many of these Coro sterling pins were created in the 1940s.
