Ornate and organic. Exuberant and ethereal. Buoyant and botanical. Art Nouveau -- a movement away from memory. A new presence -- a prelude to freedom of substance and style. Far from the ties that bound Victorian and Edwardian attitudes, it was exactly as coined: New Art.
Our example, from the first quarter of the 20th century, was the extremely popular sash pin, used to secure and / or adorn ribbons, belts and bows. It's flowing, fluid lines and embossed floral and foliage details, as well as the large, slant set, oval bezel set glass amethyst stone, has an eco friendly attitude. The Art Nouveau design period may have been short lived but it's impression, eternal.
The brooch is generously sized at approximately 3 1/4 inches x 2 5/8 inches with a 1/4 inch profile. Unfoiled and open backed faceted faux amethyst stones is about 22 millimeters x 12 millimeters. Weigh of the sash pin is approximately 34 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage / antique. The brass has developed a rich, warm patina with appropriate high and low lights and age commensurate wear. You'll fully appreciate the finish in person. Amazingly, the original glass stone is free from chips, nicks, flea bites, scratches, abrasions, cracks or breaks with wonderful purple color. No dents or improper bends to buckle shape or hasp. Pin shaft has very minor bend. It closes via the simple, age appropriate C clasp. No verdigris. No damage / no repairs.
The brooch is not signed. It is one of the finest examples of the Art Nouveau style we've seen. All original, genuine and authentic.
