Continental was one of Sherman's best known competitors and proliferated during the same time period in Montreal. Many features, such as the arching, crossover style, stone setting techniques, and rhodium plated settings were similar. Continental may have been less known, but their product incorporated the same high level of quality.
The rhodium plated set offered, circa 1960s, showcases various sized clear chaton rhinestones in the brooch and earrings with the addition of marquises in the latter. The brooch is crescent shaped with the top split section jutting slightly over the lower level. Clip earrings feature opposite crescents crossing over each other at tops. Matching sets, as with this brooch and earrings duo, did not always follow the exact same design scheme. The mission was to complement with a slight twist or turn. Continental performed the task with ease.
The brooch measures about 2 inches x 1 1/4 inches with a 1/2 inch profile. Matching clip earrings are approximately 1 1/4 inches x 5/8 inch. Largest brooch chaton is about 10 millimeters -- largest earring marquise, about 8 millimeters x 4 millimeters. Weight of the set is approximately 32 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All rhinestones intact and brilliant. There may be a stone here or there that is not perfect but the overall presentation is excellent. All rhodium plate intact, fronts and backs. All soldering intact. No bends or collapse. Pin back and earring clips strong and secure. Extremely clean. No damage / no repairs.
Reverse of the brooch is signed in a circular pattern around largest chaton: "CONTINENTAL". Each original earring clip is signed: "CONTINENTAL". The set dates to the 1960s.
