Enrobed in gold wash, this lustrous'40s vintage sterling silver floral brooch by Coro features two large unfoiled and open back set emerald cut red art glass stones. During a period when certain metals were in short supply, Coro, as well as other makers, utilized sterling silver for many of their designs. Botanical forms in the era's "Moderne" look, replete with stylized exuberance and energy, often oversized and accented with stones, were de rigueur. A welcome relief in austere times.
The brooch measures a generous approximate 3 1/2 inches x 2 3/4 inches at it's widest point. The red glass stones are about 17 millimeters x 12 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is approximately 16 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. Vermeil (gold over sterling) finish intact, front and back with no rubs or wear through. Red glass stones free from chips, nicks, cracks, or breaks. Nice faceting for velvety red shine and sparkle. Form retains shape. Pin back strong and secure. Slight bend to shaft. Clean and RTW. No damage / no repairs.
The brooch is signed on reverse within an oval cartouche: "STERLING" underscored with "BY" (both in block caps) further underscored with "Coro" in familiar script.
Sterling silver rose gold vermeil. Rich and resplendent. Retro relief from Coro. Currently at Cody's.
