A promotion in a 1962 ad campaign for Whiting & Davis' "Limoges Jewels From France", featured porcelain portraits of transfer images hand embellished with enamel hair and jewelry ornamentation. You can see the advertisement and accompanying photos on page 271 of Julia C. Carroll's "Collecting Costume Jewelry 202". Our gold tone set includes a locket pendant necklace with center oval porcelain portrait of a woman surrounded by grape leaves and vines and matching clip earrings, sans foliage. Each plaque is decorated with hand applied drops of white enamel to form hair and necklace adornments. The porcelain plaques were made in Limoges, France for the Whiting & Davis Company.
The necklace includes the original golden link chain, at approximately 22 inches with an embossed locking clip type clasp. The pendant / locket proper is about 1 3/4 inches 1 1/2 inches with a 5/8 inch profile. It opens with a side hinge to reveal interior double sided photo sections, each able to accommodate a photo approximately 1 3/8 inches x 1 inch. Clear plastic covers protect each side. Matching clip earrings are approximately 7/8 inch x 5/8 inch. Porcelain cabochons are about 17 millimeters x 12 millimeters. Weight of the set is approximately 54 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. All porcelain plaques free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. Beautiful color and detail with no rubs, wear, or stains. All gold tone finish intact, fronts and backs. Locket hinge aligned and secure. Snap shut closure secure. Clear plastic inserts intact and clean. (The interior appears unused.) Chain clasp secure. As the 1962 promotion proclaims: "Delicate little portraits on porcelain, set in golden or silvery traceries by Whiting & Davis artisans, and reminiscent of a Watteau painting."
