Sphinx, a British firm established in 1950, created it's own lines as well as jewels for Kenneth Lane, Butler and Wilson, Neiman Marcus and others. It is considered a top quality producer in the trade. Known for their enamel work, rivaling the best American companies, Sphinx utilized all types of materials in myriad designs. The example offered, circa 1950-1960s, features a large unfoiled and open backed amethyst art glass stone framed with golden pierced half domes alternating with purple rhinestone buds. The heavily pronged rectangular glass stone is done in a scissor cut, showcasing it's wonderful amethyst color. Please note the shade will vary with surrounding colors and backgrounds.
The brooch measures a very generous approximate 2 3/8 inches x 2 inches with a 3/8 inch profile. The faux amethyst stone is about 40 millimeters x 30 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is approximately 44 grams.

Gold tone finishes intact, front and back. Appropriate metal patina. Pin shaft has slight bend, not affecting function. Clean and ready to wear. No damage / no repairs.
The signature is difficult to see but is present. On reverse, near locking wheel, between the half domes, the brooch is signed within an oval cartouche: "SPHINX".
