The ingenious Duette. The frames were patented in 1931 allowing a pair of dress clips to be worn individually without the frame or joined together within the frame (which included a pin mechanism) to be worn as a brooch. They became widely popular in the 1930s and continued to be through the 1950s. Coro was one of the major players in the Duette market producing a wide variety in rhinestones and often with enameling. The company's Art Deco examples are especially popular in the collector circles.
The Duette presented, circa 1930s, features a textbook Deco design in silvered pot metal with shield shaped clips adorned in baguette, chaton and a pair of dentelle faceted chaton rhinestones. Joined together the clips become a graceful bar style brooch.
The Duette as a brooch measures approximately 2 1/8 inches x 7/8 inch with a 3/8 inch profile or height. As singles, the clips are about 1 1/6 inches x 7/8 inch. Accent chaton rhinestones are approixmately 1, 2 and 3 millimeters. Dentelle faceted chatons are 7 millimeters. Weight of the Duette is 13.3 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All rhinestones intact and sparkly -- rare in cup set pieces of this era. No off or dead stones. No dents or improper bends to metal components. Silver tone finish intact, front and back. Some minor wear on reverses. Duette frame retains shape and functions as intended. Clips retain tight snap shut closure. Pin mechanism secure. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Frame is signed in script: "Coro Duette" There is also the patent number "1798867" stamped on both clips and frame. Circa 1930s.
