Circa 1940s, with a decidedly Art Moderne design, this large, stylized vision of dual flower blossoms, bezel set with sodalite cabochons and trimmed with long, slender leaves and curved and curled stems, wears an outstanding patina commensurate with age. Dimension abounds with gently furled, veined leaves, fluted petals and high bezel settings. Sodalite cabs are in shades of blue, one with a lighter purplish tone. The darker cab is interspersed with white calcite. Both have a vitreous luster. Sterling silver patina is superb.
The brooch measure a generous, approximate 4 1/2 inches x 2 1/2 inches at it's widest point. Maximum profile is about 1/2 inch. Weight of the sterling silver brooch is approximately 22 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. Sterling silver retains form with no improper bends or dents. Pin shaft straight and strong. Locking wheel secure. All soldering secure. Patina has been undisturbed. No polishing has been done. No damage / no repairs.
Reverse of the brooch is signed near curved stem's bottom: "STERLING". It is faint and difficult to see but it is there. There is also what appears to be an "S" where one of the blossoms is soldered to it's stem ( the blossom closest to the locking wheel ). Perhaps a designer's identification or some other mark indicating inventory id or setter's stamp.
Cody's prides itself on selecting each piece of vintage jewelry with attention to it's design, workmanship and condition. A subject as simple as a flower blossom can be transformed into an artistic expression. Art Moderne managed to transcend "ordinary" with exuberant and sometimes exaggerated interpretations. The sterling silver brooch offered exemplifies the best of the movement.
