H. Pomerantz of New York excelled in large, showy jewelry and accessories, to wit: the magnificent, massive jeweled rhinestone buckle pictured. At an outrageous 4 1/2 inches across the 1930s-'40s vintage buckle, fashioned for a belt, sash, or hat band, would be at home on any stage or runway. In matte dark silvertone, the buckle is cup set with clear 3 millimeter chaton rhinestones and six pear shaped rhinestones (cup settings are riveted into place) in two sizes, the largest approximately 17 millimeters x 11 millimeters. Colors of the pears are in shades of dark rose, peridot, light amethyst, citrine, deep aquamarine, and topaz. Truly, an exciting and eccentric extravagance. Big, bold, brassy and everything in between...from H. Pomerantz, of course.
The buckle has an outside measure of about 4 1/2 inches x 3 1/8 inches. Inside measure is approximately 2 1/4 inches x 1 inch (the fitting that will accommodate the sash or belt.) The buckle weighs an astonishing approximate 124 grams. It will require either a heavy fabric, ruching or belting to support it's weight.
Condition of the buckle is excellent vintage. All components intact. All chaton rhinestone uniformly clear and brilliant. There are no dark, yellow, cloudy or dead stones. All pear stones retain color and sparkle. Some may display and ever so slight foil compromise on reverse but maintain wonderful presence. There may be some silvertone loss or the buckle may have had some darker enamel at one time. The metal has transitioned to more of a matte pewter-tone finish -- almost akin to a pot metal finish. There is no damage to the shape of the buckle. It retains a very subtle bow or arch. Center bar retains shape and strength. All rivets secure. Other than some age appropriate metal finish wear the buckle displays and functions beautifully.
The buckle is signed on the center bar with "H POMERANTZ Co". Although information on the company is limited, it appears to have been in business from about the 1930s to 1960s in New York. Along with various costume jewelry and accessories, the company specialized in large, showy buckles. There can be no doubt that the listing featured qualifies.
