Cody's Vintage Jewelry
is now SOLDIs it any wonder Schreiner shines as brightly today as when created. Exquisite designs, materials and workmanship in myriad buckles, brooches, bracelets, bibs and beyond, continue to command our attention and appreciation. Each piece was made by hand and never mass produced.
Patriarch Henry established the business in New York circa 1939. After his death in 1954 his daughter Terry and her husband Ambros Albert carried on the tradition of offering the highest quality costume jewelry.
The piece presented, although unsigned, is confirmed as Schreiner's work by Terry in Carole Tanenbaum and Eve Townsend's wonderful book: "Schreiner Masters of Twentieth Century Costume Jewelry". An example of the brooch is pictured on page 125. An amethyst colored elongated, faceted glass stone sits high and mighty secured with six prongs and surrounded by a silvery beaded frame. Steeply pitched framework is ingeniously positioned and fitted with rows of reverse / invert set olivine colored chaton and marquise glass stones. Reverse features characteristic Schreiner hook and eye construction. As with all Schreiner pieces, the consideration and care in production is evidenced throughout.
The brooch measures approximately 3 1/8 inches x 1 1/8 inches at it's widest point with a 7/8 inch profile or height. Purple glass stones is about 40 millimeters x 12 millimeters. Largest olivine green chaton stones are 4 millimeters; marquise olivine stones, 8 millimeters x 4 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is 21.1 grams.
Condition is excellent / very good vintage. There is one tiny surface flake chip on one end of the purple stone, about 1 millimeter across. The issue is reflected in price. No other flaws noted. All olivine stones secure and intact with consistent color. No improper bends, dents or crush to metal components. Antiqued silver tone finish intact, front and back. Pin mechanism strong and secure. Hook and eye and soldering secure. Clean. No repairs. Very good / excellent vintage.
The unsigned brooch is an authenticated Schreiner piece. Circa 1950s-1960s.
