Lustrous green enamel chevron links flecked in white are overlaid with caged copper crescents in Matisse's pre 1954 vintage necklace and complementing earrings set, named "Seine". Early Matisse designs, as the set presented, were generally created independent of parent company Renoir. Matisse's colorful and sometimes textured enamels were labor intensive and expensive to produce and scrutinized for high quality by owner Jerry Fels and enamelist Curtis Tann. An example of the necklace can be seen in Burholz and Kaplan's "Copper Art Jewelry".
The nine link necklace is adjustable to about 18 1/2 inches with charmed chain extension chain and hook closure. Width is approximately 1/2 inch. Matching clip earrings are about 1 inch x 5/8 inch. Weight of the necklace and earring set is approximately 66 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. All lustrous enamel intact with no chips, nicks, cracks or rubs. Wonderful color and flecking. All copper overlays intact with no dents or improper bends. Premium patina. No polishing done. All links secure and aligned. Earring clips and necklace closure secure. Reverse enameling intact with some indiscriminate flecking, perhaps inherent in manufacturing. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Each original earring clip signed in distinctive script: "Matisse". The matching necklace is not signed. Circa 1952-1954.
